Astro

Astro is comprised of Andrés Nusser, vocals and guitar; Lego, bass and drums; Octavio Cavieres, percussion and drums; and Zeta, percussion. By combining tropical music, the synthesizer and alternative rock, Astro has used its style to emerge as one of Chile’s most popular bands since pumping its first tunes in 2008. The whole thing started by accident. Frontman Andrés Nusser won a free ski trip in Chile  in exchange for playing live music at the resort. To earn his slaloms, he and his friends laid a few  tracks…and turns out they were pretty awesome. Their breakthrough single “Maestro Distorsion” features Andrés’ lovely, melodic, reverbed falsetto, epic/dreamlike synth effects and real rock ‘n’ roll drumming.

They base most of their songs on fantastic stories in their heads. “Mono Tropical” or “tropical monkey” involves steel drum effects, and it’s based on monkeys that tend the Mayan pyramids in the Mexican jungle. An EP full of silly, adorable inside jokes. With simple, child-like lyrics that focus on nature (deers, bunnies, and cherries are just a few of their favorite topics) and synthesizer-driven sounds, Chilean alt rock quartet Astro is riding a wave of international buzz. Since their formation in 2008, they've emerged as one of Chile's most popular bands and are often labeled as the español version of MGMT.
