Josh Groban

Josh Groban originally studied acting, but moved to singing as his voice developed. Groban attended the Los Angeles High School for the Arts, a free public school where students received a conservatory-style education. His life changed when his vocal coach, Seth Riggs, submitted a tape of Josh singing "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera, to Riggs' friend, producer, composer and arranger David Foster. Foster called him to stand in for an ailing Andrea Bocelli to rehearse a duet. The singer's self-titled debut album Josh Groban was released on November 20, 2001. Over the next year, it went from gold to double-platinum.

Astro

By combining tropical music, the synthesizer and alternative rock, Astro has used its style to emerge as one of Chile’s most popular bands since pumping its first tunes in 2008. The whole thing started by accident. Frontman Andrés Nusser won a free ski trip in Chile  in exchange for playing live music at the resort. To earn his slaloms, he and his friends laid a few  tracks…and turns out they were pretty awesome. Their breakthrough single “Maestro Distorsion” features Andrés’ lovely, melodic, reverbed falsetto, epic/dreamlike synth effects and real rock ‘n’ roll drumming.

Ra Ra Riot

Ra Ra Riot first met seven years ago in January 2006, while playing at houses and venues around the Syracuse University campus. They recorded a demo in February 2006. The band started to attract attention due to their energetic live shows, enough to gain an appearance at the CMJ Music Marathon, fewer than six months after their formation. Following this appearance, their live show received the first of several favorable reviews from SPIN.com, who called them "one of the best young bands we've heard in a really long time" Over the course of their seven-year career, Ra Ra Riot have, for better or worse, been known as the indie band with orchestral strings. maybe best suited to soundtracking the kind of gathering where a guy traps you in a corner and talks about the novel he's working on--not riotous at all. Cellist Alexandra Lawn left the lineup a year ago, cutting down the group’s string section to a single person. That might seem like a minor change, but it’s had a significant affect on the band. The symphonic interludes are out; synthesizers, computerized sound effects and drum machines are in.

Free Energy

Free Energy is an American rock band based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The members include Scott Wells, Paul Sprangers, Evan Wells, and Nicholas Shuminsky. Free Energy’s agenda is simple: to make some unabashedly catchy rock, and have a whale of a time doing it. Stuck on Nothing, their debut LP, was a great manifesto of everything the band stood for dueling guitar solos, stamp-clap rhythms and teenage anthems of music, love, and revolution. They have the formula memorized and can repeat it back in their new Album  with tunes from midtempo groovers like "Hangin" and handclapping rockers like "Girls Want Rock" to the power ballad "True Love." Fans of the first album’s low-rent, high-hook charm may feel that this record is a little too slick, a little measured, and overall sort of tame, and they’d have a point. But if you can get past that feeling and embrace the polished, shiny surfaces, then Love Sign delivers a pleasing dose of nostalgic, good-time almost rock & roll.

Supersubmarina

Supersubmarina is one of those bands that suggest something big from the moment they appear on the scene. They are bright and overwhelming to hear. For their sophomore album, Santacruz, rising Spanish indie pop band Supersubmarina add a new member, Javier Serrano, on keyboards and vocals, and call upon the services of renowned Scottish producer and engineer Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, the Delgados, among many others). Unsurprisingly, this gives their dark electric uptempo numbers and intense ballads a fuller and more polished sound, but at the same time they never stray too far from, or significantly improve on, the template of their debut.
